Vanity and the Spectacled Woman

Every time my optician's check up comes round, I am reminded how vain I am. I have needed glasses since I was 16, but I have only ever worn them on an 'as required' basis. I needed them when I was at college, that was a long time ago. I need them to drive, but I don't drive. Not just because of the glasses, you understand, I am just spectacularly rubbish at it. If I was meant to go backwards and turn at the same time, I would have been born with wing mirrors. So, that's me, vain and quite lazy.

Glasses, chocolate and book
There are no pictures of me wearing glasses. I rest my case.
Things have taken an unfortunate turn lately, though, in that the sight in one of my eyes has deteriorated. If I close my right eye everything is noticably blurred. So I am going to have to go and have my eyes looked at. I hate going anyway, I'm the worst patient. They ask daft questions, and puff air into my eyes, which is just wrong. It feels like being the wrong end of a flatulent hummingbird. I hate it when they say, 'which one is clearer, this one, or this one?' It feels like a pop quiz! The pressure, what's the answer??!!

It's almost a certainty that I will have to wear my glasses more often. And I need to stop being so vain about it. Lots of my friends look lovely in glasses and this will be my inspiration, when the time comes to change my prescription and start actually paying attention to it. I may even treat myself to some new ones. Here is a gallery of some of my most gorgeous friends, showing off their specs-appeal!

Women wearing glasses

From left to right; Michelle, from The Purple Pumpkin Blog, Joy from Mrs Pixie Bee, Tina from Trials and Tribulations of a Brummie Mummy and my equally gorgeous, but non-bloggy friends Sarah and Sam. If I look anything like all of them, I have nothing to worry about.

I have often wondered about laser eye surgery. Procedures have improved over the years and I know a few people who have had it done. It's becoming more affordable and accessible too. This article from Optical Express charts the history of their optical care business and makes very interesting reading. I can't see me ever being brave enough to go for it, but it's good to know advances are constantly being made in the industry. Who knows, maybe one day it will be as normal as having a filling, or getting your ears pierced and no one will have to remember their glasses ever again!

  1. I remember when I first was prescribed glasses (18 ish) and I was horrified - not cool man, not cool. And so I didn't really wear them... when I should have. Result? Worsening eye sight and to the point where I have to now wear them all the time.

My glasses have become part of me and how I look, and I look plain weird without them haha! Thanks for including me as one of your gorgeous friends! We bespectacled ladies are awesome! xx

  2. My husband has just had lens replacements for glaucoma since it reduces the internal eye pressure (artificial lenses are smaller) and although a bit traumatic it had been amazing. They corrected his considerable short site at the same time. I hate wearing glasses as I am forever cleaning them!

  3. I would feel lost without my glasses. they been a part of my life since I was aged 5 years. that was back in the day of the lovely pink or blue NHS glasses for children. then I only needed them for reading/writing.
I did go through a stage of not wearing them, must have been early teens. and since then I needed them 24/7.
I hate choosing my glasses, there are so many designs/colours. I not long had a new pair of glasses, can you believe its cheaper to get a whole new pair, rather than just get new lenses in your old frames.
thankfully there wasn't many to pick from this time as I wanted the glasses you can bend without breaking, as little one has a keen interest on my glasses at the moment, so thought it was the best bet.

  5. I hate eye tests! I do need my glasses for reading, can't see a thing without them. But I don't have to wear them all the time. I had 20/20 vision right up until my late 40s so it's all pretty new to me.

  12. Oh I hate wearing glasses, I have contact lenses in permanantly, but I got an infection recently and had to wear glasses for a week. I think they are worth spending money on finding the perfect pair if you have to wear them a lot.

  13. It sounds silly now, but when I was a kid I really wanted to wear glasses! Then when I was at uni I noticed that I can't see that well, and had to get my first pair of glasses. I got tired of them and started wearing contacts, but now I can't really be bothered with them and prefer my specs - I actually spent ages choosing them and I quite like having them now ;) Some of my friends recommended the laser surgery, but I don't think I have the guts to do it!

  20. My mum has worn glasses all her life and hated them! She had to wear quite thick, chunky ones, no fashion trends back then but she has a much lighter, easier to wear pair now. She is too old for laser operations but I wonder how she would react if she was told one day she didn't have to wear glasses anymore.xx
