My Sunday Photo: A Quick and Affordable Garden Makeover

Before and after garden makeover

Last Autumn, I attempted to tackle a particularly difficult area of our garden, where nothing seems to grow. You can see our previous attempts in this Autumn Gardening Tips post. The problem was, although we did manage to get some bulbs to flower, the grass still wouldn't grow and the bind weed grows at such a rate that it is totally unmanageable. So, we have admitted defeat and put down some slate chippings. The evening sun means that it makes it a lovely area to sit out, and hopefully it will, eventually, end, or at least slow down, the bindweed onslaught. I have to say eventually, because you need a lot more slate than you'd think when it comes to covering an area of ground, so we have been buying the bags in stages. They are 3 for £10 in Tesco at the moment, but they don't tell you the weight or how many you'll need. We've used 15 so far and still haven't managed to finish the pond corner. The bindweed around the pond is still growing daily, so I will be glad when we get some more bags next month. I would also like to get a smaller table at some stage, but here's the end result so far.

  6. It looks lovely! I remember when we bought chippings for our garden, we were constantly going back and buying more bags as they just seemed to disappear!
