10 Tips on Teenage Boys; A Guest Post by Mandi

This guest post is brought to you by Mandi, from Hex Mum Blog who has a wealth of experience in the parenting stakes. She is the perfect candidate to give me, and perhaps some other parents of young boys, a bit of a heads-up on what to expect in the not too distant future! As much as it would be lovely if they stayed cute and cuddly forever, there is a strong possibility that may not be the case, so get prepared with Mandi's musings on the teenage species. If you enjoy her brilliant observations, I'm sure she would be thrilled if you popped over to her blog, or gave her a wave on Twitter.

I am mum to seven children, three girls and four boys, ranging in age from 2 to 17, I am by no means an expert, but these are my top tips to combat the male teenage years.

1. ALWAYS knock on their bedroom door or the bathroom door before entering and maybe give a few seconds before you walk in the room, I’m not going to go into detail but trust me its definitely worth the few seconds wait.

2. Never assume that a three course meal is going to fill him up, the teenage boy has the ability to eat you out of house and home, and every other eating establishment within a ten mile radius.

3. Do not think that you have travelled to another dimension when you wake up one morning and your teenage son has turned from the pleasant polite eloquent little boy into a grunting, monosyllable being, that can barely manage to lift his head to engage in eye contact, or an entire conversation.

4. Always have an endless supply of tissues or baby wipes, it halves the washing in the household, and expect to go through toilet rolls at approx. one roll per day.

5. Do not be surprised if one day your teenage son resembles a sloth and can barely wash his face, to suddenly starting to spend an hour in the bathroom and coming out smelling like the perfume counter at Boots, this could mean he has discovered girls (or he suddenly works out that he smells dreadful!)

6. Teenage boys are also prone to selfies and texting into the small hours, even though they have seen their mates at school all day, but if you offer to have their friends over for tea, they look at you with shear horror (or maybe that’s just our house with seven of them!)

Teenager7. If your teenage son suddenly appears with dyed hair/piercing/new style of dress, try not to go mad, they are just trying to find where they fit. Chances are a couple of weeks later they will change to some other trend, but if you get too shouty about it, they may keep it up for longer because they know it winds mum up!

8. Expect that sometimes you will be living in a war zone, whether it be with siblings or one of their parents, I have yet to find a parent whose teen son hasn’t had issues with one member of the family, but it does pass.

9. DO NOT spend a fortune on clothing, as the chances are they will have completely grown out of everything, height and width, within two weeks of you purchasing.

10. Probably the most important, underneath all that teenage stuff, they are still your little boy, and you may occasionally get a hug or a “Love You”, and the teenage years don’t last forever, there is light at the end of the tunnel….

I have a young daughter - no boys yet. But this post reminds me of my brother - literally changed overnight from polite boy to the grunts. But has now morphed into a polite (less grunty) adult. Great post :)
